Disclosure and barring service (dbs) checks

What is it?

A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check, also known as a Disclosure, is a criminal background check that is carried out to identify a person’s past criminal convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings issued by the police.

Pax Animi Investigation Services are a registered Umbrella body authorised to conduct DBS checks. There are 4 levels of DBS Check, they are Basic, Standard and Enhanced.

  • A Basic DBS Check will identify any unspent criminal convictions that you may have.
  • A Standard DBS Check is more in depth and will identify any spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and final warnings.

  • An Enhanced DBS Check will show the same information as the Standard Check; however, it will also show any information held by the local police that is deemed relevant to the role for which an applicant has applied.

  • An Enhanced Check (with barred lists) will show the same information as an Enhanced Check; however, it will also show if the applicant is on the list of people barred from doing the role.

Why do I need a DBS check?

To protect vulnerable people. DBS Checks are designed to prevent unsuitable candidates from working with vulnerable people, it is against the law to employ someone who is barred from working with these groups. DBS Checks are a vital part of the safeguarding process

If you or your employees are going to be involved in regularly caring for, training, supervising, in sole charge or working with children or vulnerable adults. You will require an Enhanced Disclosure.

If you are entering into a profession as specified in the exceptions order to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, you will require a Standard Disclosure.
If you or your employees are not going to be working with the above mentioned, then you can proceed with a basic disclosure.
Avoid risk to those vulnerable groups and your organisation by carrying out DBS Checks when required.

Have confidence in your employees. DBS Checks will provide you with peace of mind, knowing that you’re hiring the right people for the job. If your employees aren’t eligible for Standard or Enhanced Checks, Basic Checks can give you an extra level of reassurance in your job candidates.
